Thin brows after years of over-plucking? Gaps that your brow pencil has to fill in every single morning? You're not alone, and there's a solution that actually works. In this guide we share what we've learned after more than 10 years of treating brows in our salons.
We've spent a decade watching brows recover: over-plucked arches from the 2000s, sparse patches after tinting and threading, brows thinned by age and hormones. We've also seen what a well-formulated serum can do when it's used correctly and given enough time. This guide covers everything we know about getting thicker, fuller brows.
No hype, no overnight miracles. Just how brow serums work, what to look for on an ingredient list, why prostaglandin-free matters, and the realistic timeline you should expect.

What a brow serum is (and whether it actually works)
A brow serum is a nourishing formula you apply along the brow line once a day. The best serums combine peptides, biotin, and nutrients that support the hair follicles during their growth phase. The result: brow hairs that grow in stronger, fuller, and denser over time.
Does it work? Yes, but not overnight. Brow hair grows in cycles, and you need to give a serum four to six weeks of daily use before you judge the result. Most of our salon clients see a visible difference within that window, with fuller-looking brows building from there.
From our salons: The most common mistake we see isn't choosing the wrong serum, it's quitting too early. Brow hairs you're trying to revive are often follicles that have been dormant for years. They wake up on their own schedule, not yours. The clients with the most dramatic before-and-afters are almost always the ones who simply kept going past week four.
How peptides build thicker, fuller brows
Peptide-based brow serums don't force growth through hormones. They feed the follicle. WOWBROW's serum is built on a peptide complex that includes clinically tested Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17, Biotinoyl Tripeptide-1, and Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3.
Peptides stimulate keratin. Keratin is the actual building material of the hair strand. By supporting keratin production at the follicle, these peptides help each hair grow with more volume, body, and density instead of coming in thin and brittle.
Botanicals care for the skin around the follicle. Panax Ginseng, pumpkin seed extract, and Swertia Japonica condition the skin along the brow line and support a healthy environment for growth. A healthy follicle bed produces a stronger hair.
Biotin, panthenol, and hyaluronic acid nourish and hydrate. These reduce breakage and keep the brow line conditioned, so the hairs you already have don't snap before they reach full length. Many people think they have sparse brows when they actually have brittle ones.
Key ingredients in a peptide brow serum
Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17
Stimulates keratin production in the hair follicle. Clinically studied for increasing hair length and density without prostaglandin-related side effects.
Biotinoyl Tripeptide-1
Anchors the hair in the follicle and reduces premature shedding. Combined with biotin, it strengthens the brow hair from root to tip.
Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3
Supports the structures that hold the hair in place and encourages fuller, denser growth. A staple of modern, prostaglandin-free lash and brow formulas.
Panax Ginseng
A botanical extract that conditions the skin along the brow line and supports a healthy environment for the follicle to grow in.
Pumpkin Seed Extract
Rich in nutrients traditionally associated with hair health. Nourishes the brow line and complements the peptide complex.
Biotin, Panthenol & Hyaluronic Acid
The conditioning trio: biotin strengthens, panthenol reduces brittleness and breakage, and hyaluronic acid keeps the brow line hydrated. Gentle enough for sensitive skin.
Why prostaglandin-free matters: a direct comparison
Some brow and lash serums use prostaglandin analogues to force faster growth. They can work quickly, but they carry documented side effects: skin pigmentation changes, irritation, and in the worst cases changes to eye colour. Peptide-based formulas are gentler and give lasting, natural results. Here's how the two approaches compare.
| Factor | Prostaglandin-based | Prostaglandin-free (peptide) |
|---|---|---|
| Growth mechanism | Forces growth via hormone receptors | Nourishes the follicle with peptides and nutrients |
| Time to visible results | Often faster | 4–6 weeks, full results by 6–8 |
| Skin pigmentation changes | Documented risk | No |
| Irritation and redness | Common | Gentle, soothing ingredients |
| Eye colour change (near the eye) | Possible with prostaglandins | No prostaglandin risk |
| Safe for sensitive skin | Often irritating | Formulated to be gentle |
| Result after stopping | Can thin rapidly | Gradual return to baseline |
| Long-term use | Increasing concern about cumulative effects | No known long-term risks |
How to choose the right brow serum
After thousands of clients in the salon, this is our checklist. Reading a brow serum's ingredient list takes 30 seconds, and it can save you months of dealing with side effects.
No prostaglandin analogues
Avoid any compound ending in '-prost' or '-prostol' (isopropyl cloprostenate, bimatoprost, and similar). These drive the side effects worth steering clear of. Prostaglandin-free is the single most important box to tick.
Clinically tested peptides
Look for named, studied peptides such as Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17, Biotinoyl Tripeptide-1, or Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3. Vague terms like 'peptide complex' with nothing named are a red flag.
Vegan and fragrance-free
Fragrance is a leading cause of irritation around the eyes. A vegan, fragrance-free formula is kinder to sensitive skin and to the delicate brow area.
A brand that actually knows brows
Companies with real salon experience formulate differently from brands that started in marketing. Ask: does this brand have professionals using their products on real clients every day?
The WOWBROW approach: Our Brow & Lash Serum was developed across our salons over more than 10 years of hands-on brow and lash treatment. It's 100% prostaglandin-free, vegan, and fragrance-free, built on peptides, biotin, and panthenol. We use it on our salon clients every day, because every ingredient was chosen as one we'd happily put near our own eyes.
How to use a brow serum correctly
Start clean and dry. Apply to clean, dry brows so nothing sits between the serum and the skin. Evening, right after your skincare routine, is ideal.
A thin line, once a day. Draw one thin stroke along the brow line. More product doesn't mean faster results, it just means waste.
Consistency beats intensity. One stroke every day for six weeks does far more than three strokes every other day. Daily application is the single biggest predictor of a good result.
Then maintain. Once you've reached the fullness you want, drop back to maintenance use a few times a week to keep it.
What to expect: timelines and results
Week 1–2: No visible growth yet. The peptides are working at the follicle level, and the conditioning ingredients may already make your existing brow hairs feel smoother.
Week 3–4: Less breakage and shedding. The brow line looks healthier and more conditioned, and stray sparse spots start to look less bare.
Week 4–6: Visible difference. New hairs coming in look fuller and denser. This is where most of our clients first notice the change.
Week 6–8: Full results. A complete brow growth cycle has now happened under the serum, and this is when before-and-after photos show the clearest difference.
Tip: Take a 'before' photo in good, consistent light on day one. It's the best motivation you'll have along the way, because day-to-day change is too gradual to see in the mirror.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a brow serum and a lash serum at the same time?
Yes. WOWBROW's serum is developed as a 2-in-1 for both brows and lashes, so you only need one product for both.
What happens if I stop using the serum?
Your brows gradually return to their natural cycle. Unlike prostaglandin serums, there's no sudden drop-off. Maintenance use a few times a week keeps your results in place.
Is brow serum safe for sensitive skin?
Choose fragrance-free, prostaglandin-free formulas with gentle, nourishing ingredients. Always patch-test on a small area first if your skin is sensitive.
How long until I see results?
Most people notice a difference at four to six weeks, with maximum results by six to eight weeks. Daily, consistent use is what gets you there.
Will it help brows that were over-plucked years ago?
Often, yes. Many follicles that look 'gone' are simply dormant. A peptide serum supports them back into the growth phase, though heavily scarred areas may respond less. Consistency over several weeks gives you the best chance.
Is the serum vegan and fragrance-free?
Yes. WOWBROW's formula is vegan and fragrance-free, and 100% prostaglandin-free, which is why it suits sensitive skin around the eye area.
Ready for fuller brows?
100% prostaglandin-free. Vegan and fragrance-free. Developed in our salons over 10+ years.
2-in-1 for brows and lashes. Visible results in 4–6 weeks.
